The Tropenmuseum

The Tropenmuseum can be found in one of Amsterdam’s most beautiful buildings. It lets you explore the most wondrous treasures and stories from around the world.

The Tropenmuseum revolves around cultures from around the world, from Africa to Southeast Asia and from India to Latin America. You will find rituals, celebrations and decorations from past and present, as well as how other cultures handle mourning and conflicts. The museum has permanent and temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibitions display treasures from the Dutch East Indies in the VOC era, among other things.

National monument
The building that houses the Tropenmuseum is worth a visit all by itself. Its opening as the ‘Colonial Institute’ was witnessed by Queen Wilhelmina in 1926. After passing through the entrance, you will find yourself in the Light Hall, from which you can survey the entire monument. The design by J.J. van Nieukerken was put on the National Monuments List in 2003.

The museum’s surroundings are also worth exploring, as the neighborhood is one of the hippest in Amsterdam. You can also visit Artis Zoo. The Oosterpark rubs shoulders with the Tropenmuseum and a selection of restaurants and cafés can be found nearby.
